How to Price Your SaaS Product Without Guessing

The Cost-Plus Trap

If you calculate your AWS bill, slap a 50% margin on it, and call that your price, you're leaving money on the table. Nobody cares how much your servers cost. They care about how much money your tool saves them.

You need to figure out the exact financial impact of your software. Does it save an engineer 5 hours a week? Multiply that by their hourly rate. That is your anchor point.

How to actually test pricing

  • Talk to people: Don't send a survey. Get on a call and ask them point-blank: "At what price does this feel like a ripoff?"
  • Look at feature gating: Don't just copy your competitor's prices. Look at exactly which features they put in their enterprise tier. That tells you what actually drives upgrades.
  • Ship the billing page first: Before you even build the product, put up a pricing page. See which tier people click. If nobody clicks the highest tier, your value prop is broken.

Stop treating pricing as a one-time decision you make before launch.
