Forget the Legal Jargon
Most HIPAA documentation is written by lawyers for lawyers. As an engineer, you just need to know what code to write to satisfy the "Technical Safeguards."
The Developer's Checklist
- Access Control: Implement strict Role-Based Access Control. If a receptionist can query the same tables as an attending physician, you fail the audit.
- Audit Logs: You must log every single time a user views a patient record. Not just updates. Views. And those logs must be immutable.
- Data Integrity: Use checksums. Prove that the data hasn't been quietly corrupted.
- Session Management: Enforce brutal session timeouts. If a doctor walks away from an open laptop, the app must lock itself.
And no, slapping a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) on your cloud provider doesn't magically secure your poorly written code.
