EHR Integration: Why It's a Nightmare and How to Survive It

The Data Silo Problem

You built a beautiful patient app. But if it doesn't push data directly into the hospital's EHR, the clinicians will hate it. Nobody wants to do double-data entry.

Why it's so painful

Healthcare interoperability is a mess. Even with the new FHIR standard, every hospital implements their data models differently. A "Patient" resource in one hospital will crash your parser in the next.

  • Don't write raw integrations: Trying to map HL7v2 messages over a VPN is a waste of your engineering talent.
  • Use an abstraction layer: Pay for a managed integration engine like Redox. Let them handle the awful hospital-specific mapping, while you hit a clean, standardized JSON API.

Treat EHR integration as an ongoing synchronization nightmare, not a one-time API call.
