What actually matters now
Core Web Vitals are mostly a pass/fail check. You don't need a perfect 100 on Lighthouse; you just need to not fail. With INP replacing FID, the game has changed from "how fast does it load" to "how fast does it react."
The Big Three
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): Stop lazy-loading your hero image. Preload it, serve it via a CDN, and make sure your server-side rendering is fast.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): If your ads or images push the text down after the user starts reading, you fail. Hardcode your aspect ratios.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): If a user clicks a button and your React app is stuck iterating through a massive array on the main thread, the page feels frozen. You need to yield to the main thread.
Fix these three things and move on to shipping features.
